Don’t be a “Fitness Fibber” this New Year

Every New Year’s Resolution is made with the best intentions, but according to new research many are guilty of letting them slide. In particular, “Fitness Fibbing” is sweeping the nation as gym dodgers use an array of excuses to avoid the gym.

A survey of 1,018 UK gym goers, carried out by personal training course provider Be a Better You, found 58% fib to others about going to the gym. The research shows that 9 out of 10 Brits skip plans to go to the gym at least once a week.

Top five reasons for avoiding a workout include being too tired (46%), forgetting a gym kit (42%), the weather being  ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’ (36%), a busy gym (26%) and eating too much (25%).

A third of those surveyed confessed to wasting money on their gym membership after only visiting their gym once over the past month.

Women take the lead over men when it comes to avoiding the gym with 53% ditching workouts, compared to 47% of men.

Simon Bubb, managing director of Be a Better You courses, said: “It’s surprising to see how many Brits start off with good intentions but end up pretending to go the gym. Hesitant gym-goers should make use of the services and support available at their gyms - personal trainers are not just there to lead a workout they are excellent for boosting motivation, provide nutritional advice, inspiration for different workout plans and suggest alternative workouts between gym visits.”

The data found the younger generation are the biggest fitness fibbers, as almost half (48%) of those who confessed to lying to others about attending the gym were aged 18-24, compared to just 9% of those aged 55 or more.

Bubb, however, had words of encouragement for these “Fitness Fibbers”, saying that there were alternatives to skipping their work-out entirely; “Everyone has a day where they lack the motivation to go to the gym or workout, but there are many ways to incorporate exercise into daily routines, on those days when the gym isn’t an option. It can be something as simple as taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking or cycling to work.”

5.        Eaten too much to work out (25%)

6.        Not eaten enough today to workout (21%)

7.        Didn’t pack shower toiletries/towel to shower (19%)

8.        Other social commitments (15%)

9.        Not updated workout playlist (11%)

10.     No headphones to work out (9%)
